As we stand up for our planet and strive for a healthier world, our clear intentions can quickly get muddled by the ever-changing articles and headlines. It can be discouraging and isolating not knowing what the next best step is. Here are three steps to help you continue your work and grow with your community:
1. Pick a Mountain
It’s impossible to be an expert on everything, but everyone can become knowledgeable about something they are passionate about. Select an issue that matters to you and stay updated on the latest developments in that area. Learn about ongoing research, be aware of misinformation circulating online, and share accurate information with your friends.
Maybe you're heartbroken over the loss of arctic habitats for baby seals and snow leopards. Perhaps you're intrigued about innovative materials emerging in the fashion industry. Or maybe you're diving into the world of composting and gardening. Whatever your interest, delve deep into it and share your insights with others. Hopefully not everyone in the friend group has the same obsession with snow leopards!
2. Take a Moment
With new information surfacing daily, it can become overwhelming. Slow down and take some time to reflect. Many of us know the little things we should be doing. If you have the energy and time, walk or bike instead of driving or using a ride-sharing service. Pick up that bit of trash you and your friends pass and put it into the nearest bin. Try a new recipe at home instead of ordering takeout. Repair that broken object instead of throwing it away. These actions may seem inconsequential compared to the climate disasters raging before us.
However, each little thing we do creates habits and mindsets that can help us and future generations. While actual research is needed to understand complex issues like oil laws affecting Indigenous cultures or the creation and impact of microplastics on oceans, many daily tasks are available to us to help improve the system as a whole. Next time you feel overwhelmed, take a moment, take a breath, and ask yourself if there's something, no matter how small, you can do today.
3. Give Yourself a Kind Word
The fact that you are reading this article means you are trying. Trying is the most important thing we need people doing. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes or beat yourself up for being imperfect. Doing the right thing and changing habits is a continuous process.
Find joy in the journey!
